Step 1: Shut OFF the Electricity Before Getting Started

Ensure power shut off before installing, replacing, or repairing any electronic items. Similarly, the garbage disposal unit must be unplugged before replacing. Mostly, you will get the plug underneath the kitchen.

To increase safety, you can also turn off the main circuit breaker of your home, which helps you to work more confidently.

Step 2: Carefully Remove Every Bolts and Old Unit

Next, you must remove the old garbage disposal unit, but first, you must safely remove the fittings and bolts. Then loosen the hose clamp and pull it from the main fittings at a loose end. At the same time, loosen the bolts that bind the drain flange to the disposer.

After removing all the bolts and fittings, the disposer will be removed. Though you can see several ways here, the most common is mount ring assembly. You need to support the disposer from below and rotate it. At the top position, keep turning the 3 tabs mounting ring in a counterclockwise direction until it falls away. After removing the disposer in this way, remove the remaining bolts and rings.

Step 3: Apply Putty and Finish the Drain

Now remove the remaining old putty and caulk stuck to the sink hole and clean it. Next, to make the new drain assembly roll the plumber’s putty on the counter until it is 1/2 inch thick. Then stick the putty roll on the underside of the drain and firmly press it into the sink hole, so it sticks well.

Step 4: Snap the Ring

After applying putty, snap the retaining ring and mounting flange to the drain spud and tighten the bolts properly with the help of a slotted screwdriver. While tightening, you may see some putty squeeze out; gently remove the residue.

Step 5: Wire and Finish It Up

Now you have to connect the circuit wire with the disposer. Connect the black lead with the black circuit wire and the white tip with another white circuit wire, then replace the cover. Also, see the InSinkErator garbage disposal’s user manual wiring part and finish the wiring safely.

Step 6: Install the New Garbage Disposal Unit

Finally, lift the disposer unit to the sink drain and grip the tab with the mounting ring. Then slip the screwdriver into a tab slot and rotate it clockwise until it bottoms out.

Then fit the rubber washer at the flanged end to plumb the disposer drain outlet. Afterward, tip the metal flange bottom, and slide the metal flange from the other side. Next, tip the bottom of the metal flange of your disposer and tighten the bolt on the top of the flange in the proper way.

Cut the crosspiece to a proper length, attach it to the drain tee, and install the P trap.
